Comments
A complaint was received referencing specifically on Fridays, swim team members seem to have increased irritation such as coughing. Complainants were concerned that the facility was hyperchlorinating on Fridays for some reason. Upon today's inspection (Friday, January 6, at 2:30 pm) the levels of chlorine,pH, and alkalinity were within acceptable parameters. Water appeared clear. Ventilation may be the root of the problem, and was discussed with the facility director. There is not an easy fix to the problem of trying to exhaust airborne chloramines. The problem is exacerbated with large numbers of swimmers introducing sweat and body oils into the water at once. Free chlorine combined with these organic particles to produce "chloramines" or also known as "combined chlorine". The chloramines are the respiratory irritant or strong "chlorine" smell one notices upon entering an indoor pool area. The facility director mentioned that another one of the Y facilities is piloting a new supplementary disinfectant system which could possibly work at the Celina facility to help reduce the load on the current disinfectant system. However, some time needs to be given toward observing long-term effect of the new system.
