Public Safety and Environmental Health

The mission of Health Department of Northwest Michigan is to promote wellness, prevent disease, provide quality health care, address health problems of vulnerable populations, and protect the environment for the residents and visitors in our communities. Our belief is that prevention is the most effective public health strategy.

The Environmental Health Division's Food Program protects the health and safety of Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmett, and Otsego county residents and visitors through regulatory activities in restaurants, and other food related operations such as; caterers, mobiles, Special Transitory Food Units (STFUs), commissaries and temporary food events. By promoting good public health practices and assuring compliance with the Michigan Food Law and FDA Food Code, our program has succeeded in reducing the risk factors associated with food borne illnesses and instilled best practices among our food operators.
