Waukesha County is home to approximately 390,000 residents, consists of 37 municipalities, and encompasses about 550 square miles.

It is a primary goal of the Waukesha County Department of Parks and Land Use – Environmental Health Division to prevent disease and promote a safe and healthy environment for all residents.

As an agent of the State of Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) and the Department of Agriculture, Trade and, Consumer Protection (DATCP); our responsibility is to enforce local and state codes regarding the inspection and licensure of restaurants, retail food establishments, hotels, motels, tourist rooming houses, bed and breakfast establishments, public swimming pools, campgrounds, and recreational / educational camps.

In addition to licensing and inspection activities at recreational facilities, the Waukesha County Environmental Health Division also;

  • Serves as a Radon Information Center (RIC).  We act as a resource to residents to understand the risks of radon exposure, test their home for radon, interpret test results and follow-up testing, and obtain effective radon mitigation services.
  • Acts as an agent for the state Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) for plan review, permit issuance, and perform inspections of private on-site wastewater treatment systems (POWTS) in Waukesha County.
  • Serves as a delegated agent for the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to perform evaluation of existing wells and assure proper abandonment of wells that are no longer in use.
  • Ensures that public water supplies meet the national standards that protect consumers from harmful contaminants in drinking water as set forth in the EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Act.  Waukesha County has an annual contract with the DNR to collect water samples and inspect wells that fall into the Transient Non-Community (restaurants, churches, etc. with ˃ 25 people on at least 60 days/ year) category.
  • Performs water tests in our laboratory that check for coliform bacteria, nitrates, fluoride, hardness, and iron.
  • Has a Humane Animal program that conducts animal abuse and neglect investigations, provides emergency assistance to law enforcement agencies, conducts county-wide rabies control, and provides humane animal education.
  • In coordination with the Waukesha County Public Health Division, conducts lead investigations to determine the source of lead exposure for children that have elevated blood lead levels.
  • Has a hazardous materials program that ensures regulatory compliance, coordinates remediation and environmental investigations for County owned facilities.
