Food Overview

The Health Department inspects and licenses certain establishments within the Village. The environmental health component of the Hales Corners Health Department is responsible for inspecting and licensing food-related establishments, as well as educating food service personnel about regulations and methods of correction. Hales Corners, as an agent for the Wisconsin Department of Health Services Food Safety and Recreational licensing section, licenses and inspects seventy licensed restaurants and retail food establishments, five school lunch programs, and one grocery store. In accordance with the agent agreement, each licensed establishment receives an annual routine inspection and additional inspections based on findings and complaints. In addition, inspections are made for non-licensed establishments and one-day food sales. In spring 2013, Health Department staff received HealthSpace training and created the database for our local food establishments. The Health Department began entering all inspection reports into HealthSpace for the 2013-14 license year. Educational resources provided to establishments by the Health Department include a manual of food safety resource materials, a quarterly newsletter related to food safety, and a Food Code educational seminar for food service workers.
